Downtown Prince George building “a complete write off” after yesterday’s fire

Prince George Fire Crews knocked down a commercial structure fire on the 1100 block of 4th Avenue yesterday.

At around 1:30pm, Fire Rescue Crews from four halls responded to the fire, where they found heavy smoke coming from the former City Secondhand store.

Fire Chief Cliff Warner says crews were able to make entry, but quickly faced challenges.

“There was an extreme storage load inside the building, preventing our crews from progressing very far.”

“That, and the expanding conditions of the fire resulted in them retreating to a defensive attack.”

Warner adds extreme heat, amount of storage, and difficulties getting water on the fire ultimately led to all contents igniting.

In terms of damages from the fire, he says the building is a complete write off, with the only wall standing being against the Croft Hotel.

Warner says the cause of the fire remains unknown, and will be coordinating with other entities to start an investigation.

The neighbouring Croft Hotel received minor water and smoke damage, and crews remain on scene attending to hot spots.

American Doctor finding warm reception on bike ride from Prince George to Alaska

An American doctor making a journey between two countries is finding friends along the way.  Dr. Craig Davis set out from Prince George in June, riding his bike to Juneau, Alaska on his Riding for Peace campaign.  His goal is to spread a message of peace, and to ask "how can we do better." 

Garbage truck replacement coming before City Council

Prince George City Council will consider replacing a garbage truck at tomorrow's (Monday) meeting. According to a staff report, one of the City's garbage trucks was in a serious motor vehicle accident on Foothills Boulevard on May 13, 2024, resulting in the unit being written off by ICBC.
