Parking ticket text scam going around, City says

The City of Prince George says a text scam has been happening involving parking tickets.

“This text that’s going around is asking for the public to make a payment, and it says that your ticket has been sent to collections, your drivers licence will be suspended, we do not do any of that,” said Acting Supervisor of Parking Control Ravneet Dhillon.

Dhillon said there’s been a few inquiries about it, including one person who had already made a payment to the link in the text.

“The City of Prince George will never send you a text for any parking tickets outstanding,” Dhillon explained.

“The first step we do is the ticket will either be served either on your dash or it will be mailed to you, a copy of it. The next step we do is after 30 days, we send you a final notice, and that will have a letterhead saying the City of Prince George.”

She added anyone who receives one of these texts should contact the City of Prince George to confirm if its authenticity.

Text scams have also been reported in the Cariboo and Kelowna.

According to the RCMP, those unsolicited text messages claim the RCMP is unable to deliver court documents, and provides a link to reschedule a court date.
