Low staffing at the centre of SD57’s surplus

School District 57 gave three readings for the 2025 Amended Annual Budget Bylaw during tonight’s meeting (Tuesday).

This comes as the School District had their surplus skyrocket from $11,934 to $1,195,152, which Board Chair Craig Brennan says isn’t as positive when you look at the why.

He says a big factor is staffing.

“It’s mostly from positions that weren’t filled, so that means jobs that we had posted were not able to find someone to fill that job, so that work was not done.”

“Those costs associated with that work then reflects as a surplus.”

Brennan says the staffing issue is something that isn’t specific to a department, and is also seen in School Districts across the country.

As for what that means for the money, Brennan says they can’t go towards any projects, due to it being an unsustainable amount.

Though he mentions it could be used for stuff that’s a one-off, as it’s funding they hope doesn’t generate every year.

Brennan expects some funding requests to come up within the next few months and into the fall.

The School District 57 board meeting also discussed the consideration of the Giscome Elementary and Central Interior Distance Education School closures.
