School District 57 investigating foul language incident

A video that appeared on social media showing the use of an apparent derogatory racial slur by a D.P. Todd teacher has prompted an investigation.

School District 57’s School Based Administration and Human Resources department began the investigation looking into what occurred, with the teacher on leave pending the outcome.

Superintendent Jameel Aziz says HR protocols and collective language agreement will determine what the process will look like.

“It is gathering statements from all of the witnesses, giving the individual an opportunity to respond, and making sure we have all of the facts clearly in front of us including things that may have occurred before or after the recorded piece made its debut.”

Aziz says he’s hopeful the investigation will be wrapped up by the end of the week, and will determine what occurs following the findings.

“Obviously we’re very concerned for the wellbeing of our students not only at that school, but across all our schools, because when things get posted to social media, they have an impact across the district.”

‘We continue to work on making sure that both our staff and our students are trained in diversity, equity and inclusion, and making sure that we have safe spaces for our students.”

Aziz reemphasizes that their schools are safe and inviting places for students, but incidents do occur, and will do their best to make sure to address it so it doesn’t happen again.
