Mayor Yu postpones trip to Taiwan for Smart City Summit

Prince George Mayor Simon Yu is putting a trip to Taiwan on hold.

According to a report to be presented to City Council at Monday’s meeting, Mayor Yu has decided to postpone this year’s visit to the 2025 Smart City Summit and Expo in Taipei.

“This decision has been influenced by several factors, including the threat of potential tariffs, existing obligations under the Mayor’s Border alliance, and our commitment to fiscal prudence,” the report reads.

“Additionally, time-sensitive obligations such as upcoming Official Community Plan (OCP) meetings and public hearings, along with scheduled engagements with the Mayor’s Housing Task Force, necessitate a focus on local priorities currently.”

The Smart City Summit is taking place in Taipei from March 18th to the 22nd.

When Mayor Yu first brought the item to Council in January, Council was supportive of his attendance.
