A UNBC study has made a lasting impact in the lives of those living with mental illness.
In 2013, the Northern Medical Program brought together the Activity Centre for Empowerment and various fitness organizations around Prince George to help those living with metal illness overcome barriers to active living.
“There are very powerful weight and health improvements, but the research has shown that participants rate their ability to do exercise as far greater than before,” says study lead by Dr. Candida Graham. “They find it easier to fit exercise into their routine, and there are more ways for them to enjoy it.”
In a previous interview with MyPGNow, Graham pointed out healthy lifestyles are very different for people accessing mental health services.
She says the program has helped participants overcome stigma to enjoy themselves and feel better.
“The community spirit here- for people to come forward and want to help- in itself, it’s made this program sustainable in a community with partnerships.”
Roughly 60 people took part in the project.
