As a result of finalized enrolment figures, School District 57’s Board of Trustees passed an amended budget at last night’s meeting…and it highlighted a troubling trend…
The number of full-time equivalent students in the district is up slightly over last spring’s projections to 12-thousand-729 FTEs.
That means a slight increase of about one-percent in government funding.
But costs rose by a larger margin – from anticipated expenses of $145-million dollars to $149-million.
As a result, the district is digging deeper into its surplus to balance the budget. Last spring, trustees had anticipated needing $3-million dollars from the surplus fund. The actual figure is just under $8-million dollars.
Trustee Brenda Hooker says spending the district’s surplus to balance the budget isn’t a sustainable practise. She says it’s a concern that has yet to be addressed.
The remaining surplus sits at $6.4-million dollars.
