Prince George Performing Arts Centre project stagnant

The Prince George Performing Arts Centre project continues to be stuck in the mud.

On Monday night, City Council heard a project update and found little progress has been made since the summer of 2014.

“There is still work to do on it. We are hoping the community will come together as an arts group and they will start doing some fundraising.” Councillor Frank Everitt said

The $50M+ project would have to be funded by all three levels of government, but a report to council shows that meetings between the City and the Federal Finance Committee have yet to take place. Community engagements and fundraising efforts by the Regional Performing Arts Centre Society also have not started yet.

The City has committed to keep the parcel of land next to the Keg Restaurant set aside for the PAC, however a handful of purchase inquires by other parties have been made. The City will continue to monitor purchase inquiries, and may release the land is if there is “significant cause to revisit the resolution”

Another report with updates on senior levels of governments interest in funding the project and local fundraising efforts is due March 31st.

That report may end up taking the final pulse for the project, as Theatre Northwest has indicated a need for a new home, saying they will begin to look elsewhere if there is no PAC commitment from the City.
