The Northern Capitals female midget hockey team begins it’s title defense next week and for two members of the team this one has a bit more meaning to it.
Goaltender Kelsey Roberts and Forward Sage Desjardins are both in their final season of midget eligibility and would love to keep the trophy in Prince George another year.
“We have 4 championships with this team and making it 5 would be pretty amazing.” Said Roberts.
“It will mean everything, half of the team are third year players and we want to play together as long as we can.” Said Desjardins.
Regardless of the outcome this will not be the end of the journey as both will be heading to the University of Calgary next fall suiting up for the Dinos women’s hockey program.
Desjardins adds she couldn’t be more pleased with the move, especially with her best friend. “I have played with Kelsey since pee-wee so heading to university with her is a dream come true.”
Roberts echoes that statement. “Moving on is an amazing experience but having one of my best friends and teammates with me will be pretty awesome.”
Nine 17 year old players are on the roster for the Capitals which also includes Grace Barlow, Taylor Beck, Victoria Byer, Hunter Mosher, Marissa Nichol, Sydney Jordan and Casey Norris.
Two other members of the club will also be playing at the collegiate level next year.
Byer has committed to Mount Royal College in Calgary while Mosher is headed to Nipissing University in Ontario.
The Capitals begin playoff action next weekend with their second round playoff series scheduled for the Rolling Mix Concrete Arena.
