Civic Centre to host Aboriginal Education conference

The largest aboriginal education symposium in Prince George is slated for Friday.

It begins at 8 am from the Prince George Civic Centre and ABED Manager, Shelly Niemi says the meeting comes at a good time.

“With the way the new curriculum is changing in British Columbia to include more perspective of aboriginals ways of knowing and doing, we found this very fitting to bring everybody together so we can learn and discuss the similar topics.”

Over 710 people have signed up for the conference so far.

In 2015, aboriginal education rates within School District 57 jumped to 61% after coming in at 32% in 2009.

Author and professor Marie Baptiste along with First Nations Child and Family Caring Society boss and author Cindy Blackstock will be the guest speakers.

Approximately 66,000 students in the province identify themselves as aboriginal which consists of 10.5% of the student population.
