A new Labtician Versavit II Virectomy machine has been donated to the Spirit of the North by UHNBC’s Auxiliary.
Community Engagement Coordinator, Esther Prosser says the new surgical equipment will improve retinal surgeries.
“It’s a surgical instrument they use to repair retinal tears or other issues and this has been a major need since last year.”
Over $38,000 was presented to the organization after a fundraiser in 2015.
The recent purchase will also be more cost effective according to Prosser. “Definitely a more portable unit and as I understand it the doctors say the technical aspects are much better. It can work for longer periods of time which provides some cost savings, is more efficient and are able to perform more surgeries.”
Some new diagnostic equipment is also on order and should arrive this spring.
