The Northern Capitals were given all they could handle by the Thompson-Okanagan Lakers but in the end the defending B.C. Hockey female midget champs pulled through.
Hunter Mosher scored the winner shorthanded in overtime to help down the Lakers 3-2 on Sunday to take the best of three semi-final series 2-1.
The Capitals held a 2-0 lead after 40 minutes courtesy of Sage Desjardins and Marissa Nichol.
Thompson potted two in the third, including the tying marker on the power-play with under two minutes left in regulation.
Head Coach, Mario Desjardins says he got a little anxious in the final few moments. “When I saw Hunter go down on the one-on-one she always likes to make a move and low and behold she did it by sticking the puck through the five hole.”
Mosher was probably the most shocked as anyone after completing the curl and drag. “It was just muscle memory I guess. I didn’t even know what I was doing until I did it.”
Caps Forward, Taylor Beck says the team couldn’t be more pleased to defend its title.
“It’s super exciting to move on and know your season isn’t over. It sucked to blow a 2-0 lead in the third but everyone had the confidence to get the win.”
The Capitals now move on to play the Vancouver Comets in the final and Desjardins believes it’s a good matchup for them.
“We have played well against them. I think it is going to be a good series and should be back and forth. They have a lot of snipers, so ours have to be ready to match them.”
The final series is slated for March 18th to 20th in Vancouver with the winner facing off against the Alberta champion in April to represent the Pacific Region at the Esso Cup.
