Northern Health says Flu and Gastro rarely cause for ER trip

Northern Health is reminding you that the flu means staying in bed, not in the hospital.

A late start to the flu season and higher than normal cases of gastrointestinal illness have caused a rush of people to flood the UNBC hospital emergency room.

Northern Health spokesperson Jonathon Dyck reminds you that the E.R. is for those dealing with sudden health changes and trauma.

“There are a number of factors that are happening at the hospital right now so we’re asking for the public’s support for keeping the emergency room for emergencies only,” he says, “That was our staff and physicians can tend to the patients that they need to.”

He adds the E.R. should only be used for things like breathing issues, broken bones, and severe bleeding.

In most cases of the flu, Dyck says your best bet is calling 8-1-1, heading to a walk-in clinic, or seeing your doctor.
