The Canada Safety Council is celebrating National Summer Safety Week starting on Sunday.
This year’s campaign is Swim, Don’t Sink in order to reduce drowning-related deaths in Canada.
Communications and Media Program Coordinator, Lewis Smith believes there’s a simple solution to the problem.
“One of the factors that can and should be considered in reducing these deaths is if people wear lifejackets. Often times these deaths are drowning-related.”
“Alcohol is another factor due to the fact a lot of people during the summer are on boats, you’re having some beers with friends and the next thing you know someone is overboard, that’s another factor to consider because in most cases the vast majority of the people involved had no plans of going in the water.”
In 2014, there were 308 preventable water-related deaths in Canada according to the Lifesaving Society of Canada.
National Summer Safety Week Runs from May 1st to 7th.
Of the 2400 drowning deaths in Canada between 2008 and 2012 82% of the victims were male.
