ICBC is urging drivers and cyclists to be aware of each other on BC roads.
Program Manager, Aileen Shabata believes it all starts with vehicle owners opening their doors.
“Be really careful before opening your car door especially when your parked parallel on the street by using your opposite hand to open the door and by shoulder checking to make sure there are no cyclists.”
“Dooring” can severely injure or kill a cyclist and accounts for 1 in 14 cyclist incident in BC.
Cyclists should keep at least one metre away from parked vehicles and watch for people coming out of them.
In BC, 670 cyclists are injured with six being killed in car crashes from June to September.
