Prince George RCMP following province’s lead on distracted driving

An enforcement campaign targeting distracted drivers has been unveiled by the Prince George and North District RCMP.

Corporal Craig Douglass says people underestimate the negative effect a cell phone can have while driving.

“We drive around this community and we see people driving and texting all the time and they don’t think anything of it because they think they can handle it, they think they can drive and do this at the same time until something happens and then they think wow that made a difference.”

This comes after the new distracted driving laws in BC took effect on Wednesday.

First-time offenders will face a 543 dollar fine with 4 penalty points on their license.

If you get caught a second time within a year and you’ll be paying 888 dollars.

If you’re an L or an N driver, getting caught with an electronic device while driving could mean losing your license for up to 6 months for a first offense.

Something going on in the Prince George area you think people should know about?
