Prince George safe from potential gas shortage

Petro-Canada gas stations in BC and Alberta could be on the verge of a gas shortage according to Suncor.

Senior Petroleum Analyst for Gasbuddy.com, Dan McTeague says at this point in time, Prince George is safe.

“There is a good likelihood you may not see unless this continues to unfold unless Suncor cannot produce enough gasoline out of Edmonton but fortunately you guys have the Husky Refinery in your backyard.”

The affected cities include Kamloops, Kelowna, Edmonton and Calgary.

Kelowna’s Glenmore Petro-Canada location ran out of gasoline as of 3 pm on Thursday and ran out of premium gasoline just two hours later.

The wildfire in Fort McMurray has played a part but is not the only problem.

“There is no doubt the fire doesn’t help because that means crude production is down but we are flying blind in Canada because we do not know the on-going week to week crude inventories let alone the gas inventories in Canada.”

When it comes to supply and demand the United States are much better prepared.

“The Americans have quite an advantage over us because they can tell what the supply and demand picture is pretty much across their country. Unfortunately, in Canada, we refuse to have that transparency and let the industry make those decisions for us and that’s fine until we start running out of gasoline.”

Petro-Canada is Dawson Creek is running out of gasoline to the fire in Fort McMurray.
