A former minor hockey goaltender in Prince George will be heading to Ontario next fall to continue his hockey and academic interests.
Kris Joyce has committed to the University of Windsor Lancers next season and explains why he chose this route.
“It’s kind of a good situation for me there since they have only one returning goalie and is just a 2nd-year guy so it’s a chance for me to play a lot. I think it’s going to be a good route for me and will be a step up in play. It will not be a cakewalk that is for sure, the Ontario division is stacked with ex-pro grads.”
Joyce had as many as six NCAA Division 1 schools interested in him during his final year of Junior A hockey in Saskatchewan playing for the La Ronge Ice Wolves where he was named SJHL MVP.
He says one thing held him back from going down south.
“For me, it was my grades since I didn’t take it serious enough in high school and kind of bit me on the way out. Basically, I was one class short and once you are past a year out of high school you can’t upgrade your marks, I probably should have done a full course load of university classes this year so I would have been eligible to transfer to a NCAA school.”
This past season Joyce recorded a 2.67 GAA in 50 games with a .931 save percentage.
Before heading to the prairies, he spent two years playing Junior B with the Sicamous Eagles of the KIJHL where he also recorded the best save percentage during the 2013-14 season with a mark of .933.
