Postal Union says no to binding arbitration

Negotiations between Canada Post and it’s Union are at a stand still after the said no to binding arbitration on Thursday.

The lockout notice by Canada Post has been extended to Monday at midnight.

Prince George Postal Union President, Tami Brushey believes it was too soon for Canada Post to make that move.

“It’s pretty early in the process we think for arbitration, we’ve been negotiating with the employer on Monday and Wednesday. We are also not interested in arbitration because one of our demands is pay equity for the Rural Mail Carriers and we don’t think pay equity should be determined by an arbitrator.”

Pensions plans remain a hot topic with Canada Post offering less pay and a different pension plan for newly hired workers.

Brushey adds Canada Post is asking customers to use Purolator so they can funnel their work elsewhere and use that as an excuse to lock out the workers due to low mail volume.

Canada Post made its last offer to the Union on June 21st.
