Speranza’s hat-trick lifts Bisons to victory over T-Wolves

One bad bounce is all it took for the game to go south on the UNBC Timberwolves women’s soccer team on Sunday.

After a strong 40 minutes against the Manitoba Bisons a misplay led to a 5-0 victory for the Bisons in Prince George.

Sara Schur capitalized on a turnover in the 41st minute to make it 1-0 for Manitoba.

It quickly turned into the Selina Speranza show as she scored a natural hat-trick beginning in the 43rd minute on an end to end rush.

Speranza was quick to give credit to her teammates for being a major part of her success. “I would say the team did really well at getting the ball back when we would lose it, the first one came off of transition cause we kind of caught them off guard and I just used my speed and took advantage of it.”

Speranza added her other two in the 52nd and 58th minute.

Alyssa Daley put the icing on the cake for the Manitoba adding another in the 74th minute.

One of the bright spots for the T-Wolves was the play of 2nd year midfielder Julia Babicz who played very well in both losses this weekend.

She believes the team didn’t respond accordingly after giving up the first goal.

“Right after the first goal we didn’t get our heads on straight after and we need to do that next game since it’s harder to come back down 2 goals than 1.”

Timberwolves were outshot 8-5 and fall to 0-2 on the season.

UNBC plays two straight on the road Saturday and Sunday against UBCO and TRU.

In men’s action the UNBC men’s soccer team could not find a way to stop the foot of Ryan Glanville who scored twice in a 3-0 win over the Timberwolves on Sunday.

26 fouls were called including three yellow cards on UNBC players Emmanuel Dramme, Jonah Smith, and Cheona Edzerza.

UNBC drops to 1-5 on the season and play two home games on Friday and Sunday at the NCSSL fields against Saskatchewan and Winnipeg.
