School District applies for funding for lead remediation at 4 local elementary schools

School District 57 is going ahead with its 2016/17 Five Year Capital Plan Summary.

It includes the replacement of Kelly Road Secondary and an expansion to DP Todd Secondary School.

As part of the plan, the District has also applied for funding to help with lead mitigation at several elementary schools.

“The removal of lead from the drinking water in Edgewood, Foothills, Nukko Lake and Pineview Elementary will be addressed through the School Enhancement Program project call for proposals,” says Trustee Sharel Warrington. “That doesn’t mean that they won’t go forward. It just means that we’ve applied for dollars to support the remediation of the lead.”

Mitigation efforts have been in effect since the levels were detected and the district plans to move ahead with remediation work and hope that the money comes later.

A total of seven school facilities in the District tested positive for high lead levels.

Warrington say the issues at Kool Cats and Heritage have already been resolved and Nusdeh Yoh’s problem is being dealt with as part of a renovation.

“That mitigation is taking place with its renovation. It’s under a major renovation project. Issues around the building envelope are being addressed and the lead mitigation issues will be dealt with through those dollars.”

The District is also applying for funds to help with the replacement of the classroom heating and ventilation units at Blackburn Elementary and Ecole Lac des Bois, the replacement of the dust collection system in the Industrial Education classroom at D P Todd Secondary and the prevention of water damage to classrooms at the John McInnis Centre.
