With the shorter days and longer nights, pedestrian safety is top of mind for ICBC and the province.
On average, 59 pedestrians are killed and 2300 people are injured each year in BC between October and January.
The regional numbers aren’t much better according to ICBC Spokesperson, Sam Corea. “For Northern BC, on average 70 pedestrians are injured in 92 crashes every year so it is a serious issue in all parts of BC.”
About 70% of pedestrian crashes happen at intersections in BC.
Pedestrians can stay safe by making eye contact with the driver, wearing bright and reflective clothing, plus staying focused on the road.
Since 1999, the province has set up cameras at 140 of the highest-risk intersections in British Columbia.
