School district secures its piece of the new BC Student Transportation Fund

In August, the BC government announced the creation of the nearly $15 million Student Transportation Fund, with money to be given to districts who produced and submitted a plan by September 30.

School District 57 was eligible for up to $687,000 – and that’s exactly what they’ve received.

School Board Secretary Treasurer Allan Reed says the money is good news for the district.

“We transport over 3,000 students of 9,400 kilometers each and every day but we are spending over $230,000 more than we are receiving in funding and this additional, new funding, which we understand will be ongoing, will certainly help us address and to continue to provide those services.”

He says the funds will go toward eliminating that $230,000 gap.

“We’re also looking at student safety in the area of curricular and extracurricular transportation for our rural and remote schools and for congestion in parking lots for our schools in Prince George.”

SD 57 is far from alone in its award. In fact, it looks like every district in the province will be getting some contribution from the fund. Reed says every district elected to apply for a portion of the $14.7 million fund and all were given allotments of varying sizes.
