1.4 million cases of diabetes or pre-diabetes have been recorded in BC according to the Canadian Diabetes Association.
That equates to 28% of the population and could spiral to 46% if left unchecked.
BC/Yukon Regional Director, Sheila Kern says two options are available to help combat the issue. “Number one is the 21-Day Challenge and the thought is if you adopt the challenge for that period of time it becomes a habit. The other one is to take the diabetes test on our website to see what your risk is.”
In BC, $400 million dollars a year is spent on diabetes medications as well as hospital and specialist visits.
The national number state 11 million people in Canada are either diabetic or pre-diabetic.
November is Diabetes Awareness Month with World Diabetes Day taking place on November, 14th.
