Stationary classroom bikes helping kids stay focused

The Prince George Montessori Education Society is taking a new approach to keeping kid’s focused.

There are now stationary ‘Spark Brain Bikes’ in select Prince George classrooms.

Grant Chair Elaine Goudie says a little pedaling can make all the difference.

“Kids who have lots of extra energy or maybe are having some issues focusing or maybe just having a bad day, they can get on the bike for five or ten minutes and kind of work through those emotions. It’ll help them kind of refocus on what’s going on in the classroom.”

The program has been successful so far. She says students have also used the bikes to deal with anxiety and stress, especially during recent lockdowns.

Teachers have noticed a different in the classroom as well, says Goudie.

“(They’re using the bikes) closer to circle time so kids that may have issues with sitting down at circle time and focusing on a lesson or a story can actually be using it while a lesson or a story is in progress.”

There are 10 bikes: 1 at PGSS, 8 at Polaris Elementary, and 1 at the Child Care Centre.

The bikes cost about $700 – $750 each and are funded through Northern Health Imagines and Telus Community grants.
