UNBC Political Science Department Member Gary Wilson has sounded off on Tuesday’s US election won by Donald Trump.
Wilson says the biggest problem for Canada is the unknowns surrounding what a Trump President will look like and the type of impact it may have on Canada.
“One of the things that he did talk about was re-visiting trade agreements. Our economy is a part of NAFTA and the idea he wants to revisit and renegotiate could have major impacts on our Canadian economy.”
The election of Trump is also telling sign on where the country is at. “A lot of the states in terms of their own votes were very close including some of the key battlegrounds and we are looking at a country that is very divided with the tone of the election campaign not helping that either.”
Wilson classifies Trump as a populist and believes he’ll be unable to re-launch the country’s decimated manufacturing sector.
“Populists tend to promise a lot but tend to not be able to deliver on these promises. He’s promising to bring back manufacturing jobs that had disappeared years ago and I don’t think that is going to happen. I don’t see how he is going to bring those jobs back.”
Both Trump and Clinton recorded 48% of the vote with Trump claiming victory in several battleground states like Florida, Georgie, and Pensylvania.
