Spruce Kings fall short against the Grizzlies

The Prince George Spruce Kings may have played hard on Sunday against the Victoria Grizzlies but didn’t play smart.

The Spruce Kings fell 6-2 to Victoria after a squandering a 5 on 3 for 1:45 in the second period and a double minor during the third period resulting in zero goals.

Marty Westhaver put the Grizzlies ahead early in the first period after ripping a slapshot over the shoulder of Prince George goaltender Tavin Grant.

Travis Schneider evened the score for the visitors taking advantage of an Ethan De Jong feed to make it 1-1.

Victoria feasted on sloppy defensive zone coverage resulting in two more markers from Cole Pickup and Jamie Rome for a 3-1 lead after 20 minutes.

After Ben Poisson made it 3-2 at the end of the second the wheels fell off for Prince George in the final frame allowing three unanswered goals to Cameron Thompson followed by a pair from Rome who would complete the hat-trick.

Prince George outshot Victoria 46-35 overall but went 1 for 7 on the power-play.

The Spruce Kings enter the Christmas break in 4th spot in the Mainland Division one point back of the Langley Rivermen and eight up on the Surrey Eagles.

The Rivermen come back to the RMCA on December 29 and 30 at 7pm.
