Spruce Kings bit by Vipers, fall short against Silverbacks

A 4-1 lead wasn’t big enough for the Prince George Spruce Kings on Sunday losing a 5-4 heart-breaker in double overtime to the Vernon Vipers.

The Spruce Kings jumped out to a 2-0 edge after 40 minutes thanks to goals from Ben Brar and Brett Mennear.

That’s when things got real interesting.

The Vipers got on the board just 1:15 into the frame when Ryan Brushett potted his sixth of the season from Simon Sagissor and Austin Adamson cutting the deficit to 2-1.

Prince George responded accordingly with two unanswered goals of its own off the sticks of Tanner Campbell and Keegan Ward giving the Spruce Kings a three-goal lead with just over seven minutes to play.

Vernon then mounted a three-goal rally that got kick-started by 19-year old forward Jimmy Lambert followed by Cameron Trott and former Cariboo Cougar Steven Jandric.

Brushett completed the comeback at 3:29 of double overtime beating Tavin Grant for the game-winner.

The Vipers outshot Prince George 47-32.

20-year old defender Tyler Anderson recorded a three-assist night for the Spruce Kings.

Prince George also fell 3-1 on Saturday in Salmon Arm to the Silverbacks who outshot the Spruce Kings 39-20.

Former Vancouver NW Giant grad Justin Wilson led the way with a pair of goals.

Brett Mennear scored the lone goal for the Spruce Kings.

Prince George begins another three-game road trip on Thursday against the Surrey Eagles who they have an 11 point lead on for the final playoff spot in the Mainland Division.
