The Ministry of Forests, Lands and Natural Resource Operations will begin conducting a series of open burns in part of the Prince George Fire Zone this week.
The burn project will cover about 3.8 hectares north of Frenkel Road and is scheduled to start on Wednesday, June 7 and continue periodically until October 31.
“Smoke and flames may be visible from Highway 16 West, Blackwater Road and Franklin Road,” says Amanda Reynolds, fire information officer for the Prince Goerge Fire Zone. “The goal of this project is to mitigate wildfire hazards by removing lower tree branches and accumulations of forest fuels on the ground.”
Weather, site conditions and crew availability could affect the burn schedule and open burning will only take place if conditions for quick smoke dissipation and low-to-moderate fire intensity occur. Debris piles should be extinguished within 24 hours of being lit.
Trained BC Wildfire Service crews will carefully control and monitor the fires at all times.
