Vanderhoof Hatchery to release less fish than predicted

A new fish hatchery in Vanderhoof has created 72 families since opening. The Nechako White Sturgeon Hatchery spawned 12 males and six females creating the new families in late May. Manager Cory Williamson says they went through a six week incubation process.

“With the eggs that we collected, our hope was that we were going to release 12,000 fish in the spring,” says Williamson, “we had some challenges in July with unexpected temperatures and learning the system so our first feeding losses were higher than expected.”

Williamson says they expect to be releasing between 1000 and 1500 white sturgeon. He says the hatchery’s goal is to help bump up the number of fish in the river.
