Softwood lumber an immediate priority of new NDP government: Stikine MLA

Stikine MLA Doug Donaldson has a few immediate priorities when the NDP form government in the coming weeks.

One is to implement the Supreme Court decision on funding classrooms – the other is tackling softwood lumber tariffs.

“During the election, John Horgan made it a commitment to get right on the softwood file by making a trip to Washington….we want to be front and centre in the people’s mind in the United States that are making these decisions,” says Donaldson. “That file has just been left to drift for many, many months now.”

As for the Supreme Court decision, Donaldson says they need to get moving with a new school year only a few months away.

After yesterday’s vote of non-confidence, Christy Clark has stepped down as premier with the Lieutenant-governor asking NDP Leader John Horgan to form government.

The Premier-Elect is expected to be sworn in sometime in the next few weeks.

Donaldson is one of two NDP MLAs in the north.
