Bear encounters increasing district wide

2014 has been a bit of a busy one in terms of the number of bear and cougar sightings this late into the year.

Sergeant Kevin Nixon with the Wildlife Management Branch explains:

“If there’s ever a year that you want to have your bird feeders in, feeders don’t need to be out for the birds this time of the year, and your apple trees picked and your garbage secured. Things like putting your garbage out the night before garbage pickup is unacceptable, I just need to lecture the public that this is a bad bear year and we are experiencing a very high number of calls”

He says that on average his officers handle around twenty bears a year, yet they are right in the middle of the busy season and have dealt with over thirty cases already.
