Thirty-five new homes broke ground during the month of August in Prince George according to the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC).
That’s up from just 21 housing starts during August of 2016.
Single detached units continue to lead the way.
“On the single detached side of the market, there were 27 starts for the month of August relative to 19 in the same month last year. On the multi-unit side, there were a total of eight housing starts in August relative to the same month of last year,” said Taylor Pardy, market analyst.
Prince George also continues to fall behind last year’s pace when it comes to the year-to-date figures.
“Starts are down with about 157 new homes getting underway relative to 231 starts in the first eight months of last year,” said Pardy.
Cities of similar size are experiencing the same fate when compared to last year’s breakout according to
Pardy.
“Multi-unit starts have actually not kept up with 2016. Interestingly in Prince George on a year-to-date basis single-detached starts are up and it’s the same story for Kamloops and Vernon.”
The September housing start numbers are expected to be released in mid-October.
