New traffic lights at Ferry and Ospika intersection ready to go

Prince George motorists will notice a nice change at the intersection of Ferry and Ospika.

Road crews fully activated the new traffic lights this morning, which should slow down traffic along the Highway 16 West corridor.

“It’s great to get it in there and it provides a lot of accessibility to the network especially for left turn movements and  provides a safer crossing opportunity for pedestrian and it provides just a better movement and flow especially giving a secondary option for traffic off of the highway,” said Chris Vliegenthart, supervisor of transportation engineering.

He adds while that stretch of road is famous for its large volume of traffic, a number of collisions haven’t been as high as people think. “There haven’t been that many incidents there in the past but it definitely has a collision history. People are pretty cautious because of the way that the intersection functioned before and it’ll definitely provide that opportunity in reducing delay for traffic travelling on Ferry Avenue.”

All left turns will now occur on a green light when it is safe to do so.

The city has worked hard to upgrade the intersection since the 2009 Transportation Network Study.

The total cost of the project was $280,000.

Construction crews began working on the project since August.
