A recommendation the SD57 support the addition of Quinson Elementary School to the city of Prince George heritage register was approved by board members last night.
A presentation was held on all the reasons why the school should be considered a heritage site at the meeting.
Quinson was one of the first school to change the standard square classrooms into a pentagon shaped room explains Architect Trelle Morrow.
“It has been said that the square and rectangular classroom, you’ve got three or four row of seats and the teacher stands or sits at the front indicating that he or she is the boss of the situation.”
Morrow was part of the group that decided to change the way we normally look at a classroom.
“What should the relationship be between the student and the teacher. That’s what we were asking ourselves and the educators in the 1950’s and 60’s were saying look we should be changing this if we can somehow.”
Quinson stands as the singular attempt at changing the way people look at classrooms to make them more interactive.
SD57 voted unanimously to support Quinson Elementary to the heritage register.
