IIO closes case on 2014 Valemount RCMP shooting

BC’s police watchdog has lifted charges against Valemount RCMP in a shooting incident more than three years ago.

The Independent Investigations Office (IIO) has determined members of the Emergency Response Team were not responsible for the death of a man on September 17th, 2014.

He was killed after efforts to make an arrest were unsuccessful, and another individual was seriously injured.

IIO and Crown Counsel have stated the case shows charges laid against the officers were not met properly when initiating prosecution.

According to Valemount RCMP’s initial report, the suspect had access to firearms, had a history of violence, and was considered as anti-authority.
