Northern BC saw some ups and downs in 2017.
Nechako Lakes MLA John Rustad highlighted the effect the BC wildfire had on many residents in the north.
He says although that will be something many people take away from 2017, there are some good things which happened.
“The one thing I’m really proud of, which will come into effect on January 1st, is the fifty per cent reduction that we’re able to implement for medical service premiums. That’s something we put through in our budget last spring and fortunately, the NDP are caring through with it.”
Looking forward Rustad says 2018 will be a challenging year after they saw a shift in political climate, as the NDP and Greens joined together to form a minority government in the legislature.
There are many topics that will be tackled in the new year.
“Marijuana laws that will be brought in and how that will be done, there is the issue of ridesharing, as well, of course, there will be the referendum of proportional representation and that will set the course for how politics will look in British Columbia for potentially the next generation.”
Rustad also mentioned the softwood lumber dispute, after the Trade Commission sided with the U.S. saying Canada’s production hurts the American industry.
He says going into 2018 there’s a lot of uncertainty surrounding the trade that will have an effect on many people in Northern BC.
