Young Athletes Put To The Test To See If There’s An Olympian In Them

Around 30 kids showed up to take part in the RBC Training Grounds in hopes they might have what it takes to be an Olympian.

The event was held at UNBC where kids tested their strength, power, speed and endurance in different activities.

“They go through the different test and they’re actual bench marks for each sport organization that they are measured against.” Says Beach Volleyball Olympian Jamie Broder. “So if we see an athlete in a predicted measure of that national organization then they’ll likely be invited to do more testing.”

Last year 12 PG athletes who attended the event were asked to do additional testing with a national sports organization.

Broder explained what different challenges each athlete had to face.

“We have power, which is the vertical jump. Strength is an isometric mid-thigh pull where we’re just seeing how hard they can pull against this weight. Speed is a 40 minute sprint. And finally the endurance component, which is the beep test.”

If they are able to perform well on these test they will be invited to regional’s in Vancouver where they could receive funding to pursue one of the sports they’re interested in.

The final results won’t be posted until Tuesday.
