College Heights could be getting a new apartment building

Another step forward has been taken to bring a new multi-family residential building to College Heights.

A six-story apartment building could soon be in the works following council’s 5-4 vote in favour of a rezoning application at the intersection of O’Grady Road and Stringer Crescent.

The original report from June 26th, 2017, brought the recommendation that council deny the rezoning, something that carries quite a bit of weight for Councillor Jillian Merrick

“I put a heavy reliance on our staff recommendations,” she explains.

“They know our official community plans and our future development priorities inside and out.”

Merrick was one of the four to oppose the application. The others were Councillors Frank Everitt, Murry Krause, and Brian Skakun.

Merrick says while she does understand the needs of the city, she just was not convinced on this particular project.

“I have no doubt that the need for more multi-family housing is definitely there in College Heights but this is a very, very large project and I think there were improvements to be made to the project before allowing it to go through.”

The development is projecting to provide 167 units, once completed.
