2017 proved to be a successful year for tourism in BC

BC was a destination choice for business and leisure travel in 2017.

This was due to several factors, including increased access to BC from international markets, such as Australia, Germany, Mexico, China and France.

The province saw an increase of 3.3 per cent from 2016, or 181,700 visitors.

This is good news for BC, but Spokesperson for Tourism PG Erica Hummel says the recent cancellation of Greyhound routes may be a concern this year.

“Access is always critical, especially up north here. Anytime we loose any kind of access whether it be a bus or a flight, like the one we lost from Calgary last year than gained it back, but any time we lose these pieces it’s not helpful and it limits a couple of different markets.”

This year, Tourism PG is going to focus on creating a campaign to drive more people to the north.

“We’re going to expand our Stay and Play campaign, it was generally a winter campaign, it’s going to be expanded to the whole year so we can basically promote all of our entertainment, shows at CN Centre, Theatre, culinary scene throughout the region,” added Hummel.

In total, 5.7 million overnight visitors came to the province last year.
