PG Fire crews receive nearly 600 emergency calls last month

February proved to be a very busy month for Prince George Fire Rescue crews in and around the City.

According to Fire Chief John Iverson, the service responded to almost 600 phone calls an increase of 10% from the same time last year.

“It was very quiet for the last six months, but then the month of February hits. We are just getting busier and we’re seeing a slight increase in the number of medical calls, we’re seeing potentially some motor vehicle accidents due to inclement weather.”

The emergencies range anywhere from medical calls (80%) to structure fires (11%).

With the new main hall to be built next to the YMCA of Northern BC, thanks to the October referendum, Iverson is certain that number will rise in the years to come.

“It’ll increase the footprint of our eight-minute response time by about 50%. So the actual square kilometres we can cover with eight minutes goes up just over 50%, and will get two more addresses quicker than usual.”

Iverson assures the public there’s enough bodies on the team to respond to as many situations as they can.
