Childcare fee reduction initiative could help families save

Prince George’s Duchess Early Learning Centre is one of many childcare facilities in British Columbia applying to opt in for a fee reduction initiative.

Families receiving care at approved centres, including Duchess, will be eligible for up to $350 for the month of April.

“I think this levels out the playing field for parents that may not necessarily have the financial means to get that first class childcare that provides all the essential learning and development for their children,” says Duchess Early Learning Centre Owner Vanessa Blishen.

There have been 1,150 childcare providers applying for the fee reductions, 86% of them that have been processed are choosing to opt in., much to the delight of Blishen.

“I think if we unite, we can see huge changes happen possibly across Canada,” she explains.

“That’s one of my goals and my dreams is to see childcare be amalgamated under the education system. We’ve got a long road ahead of us and it’s going to be tough but I think Canada can do it.”

The cut-off date for centres to apply is April 20th.
