Local dance to empower people who are self conscious

An event to get people out of their mind and into their body is being held in Prince George.

Sacred Social Dance: Conscious Dance is being held tonight at 6PM from the Willow Empowerment Centre on Pulpmill Road.

The dance session can empower people who feel self-conscious about their body.

“We live in a society where we feel often judged by others and I often run into this situation if we can leave out the self-consciousness and we really manage to leave that out and connect with the body and mind it really can bring us back to a rhythm,” says dance organizer Barbara Buch.

These dances have been in place in the northern capital since the winter after it was determined nothing was being offered previously.

“I started these dances in January and I did that because I didn’t see anything similar in Prince George and honestly, I needed it for myself and I know how beneficial it is.

“I am a health educator and have experienced it in my own healing process, it`s so beneficial on so many levels that I thought if nobody is offering it here then I will just do it.”

Buch believes all too often people in society are in their survival brains due to the stresses of work and the personal lives, furthering denying ourselves a proper chance to unwind and get out of that mode.

“We are asked to perform and survive in daily life and so we never have a regular playground where we can get out of our survival brain and we need that to rebalance our mental and physical state in my opinion.”

The pace of the dance is both methodical and intense with the intent of getting people to trigger various emotions.

“The music is arranged in a certain way where it starts slow goes into a high rhythm and ends slowly again and so you go through different emotional music pieces, which can trigger something within yourself and it will help release it so it’s a way of not always storing it in your body but to let it out.”

The session runs until 8PM.
