Two Facebook representatives joined the Standing Committee on Access to Information, Privacy, and Ethics Thursday morning to discuss Facebook’s privacy issues.
Kevin Chan, Head of Public Policy for Facebook Canada, and Robert Sherman, Deputy Chief Privacy Officer for Facebook Inc., testified as part of the committee’s study on a breach of personal information involving Cambridge Analytica and Facebook. They said over 600,000 of the 23 million Canadian Facebook users had their data compromised.
“We’ve seen intent for Facebook to tighten up access to data and access to personal information in their platform,” says Prince George – Peace River – Northern Rockies MP Bob Zimmer, who also sits as chair of the committee.
“I think they’re being challenged of keeping up with that now and it’s difficult but considering how big of a platform they are it’s something they need to do.”
The Conservative MP notes the committee is comprised of multiple parties, but they were not divided on this issue.
“We’re in agreement with all parties and all sides,” explains Zimmer.
“The Liberals heard the majority in the committee, Conservatives second, and NDP third, and yet we’re all unanimous in that we think Facebook hasn’t done enough and needs to do more.
Zimmer, and the committee, will continue to work with the social media giant to ensure safety for Northern BC residents and all Canadians.
“As chair of the committee, I think we’ve all appreciated the good parts of Facebook in connecting with loved ones and connecting with voters on a daily basis. I check Facebook regularly for my news,” said Zimmer in a statement.
“Yet we task you with a deep responsibility of keeping Canadians’ data safe. I think this is one thing that is unique about this committee is that all parties are committed to do what we need to do to ensure that you keep Canadians data safe.”
