A late spring has Prince George residents seeing a variety of visitors in our community.
A few black bears and moose’s have been spotted around the city, most in search of food waste.
“So far, we’ve had a couple of black bears sightings,” says Conservation Officer Craig McCulloch. “Nothing like last year. I think around now we are currently half a dozen, where as last year we were at 20 or so for the month of April. It increases significantly through May, June and July.”
McCulloch wants to remind the public to be cognizant of how they dispose of their garbage and any other products that may attract wildlife. If you do find yourself in a conflict with an animal there are a couple of things you can do.
“Making lots of noise, making yourself big if you do come into contact or in close proximity to any wildlife. Back away slowly, and of course, give us a call afterwords and letting us know what happened so we can respond appropriately.”
Under the wildlife act it’s illegal to feed or attract dangerous wildlife, such as bears. Penalties can be as high as $100,000 in fines and one year in prison.
