After a lengthy winter and lots of snow, the spring melting season could case some issues for local residents living near rivers.
This is becoming a concern for the Regional District of Fraser-Fort George (RDFFG), who are reminding everyone to take extra precautions for potential flooding.
While the warmer weather is welcoming to Prince George, RDFFG Spokesperson Renee McCloskey says personal safety should be the top priority.
“Particularly, if that body of water is fast flowing, it could lead to banks that aren’t very stable. There could be some undercurrents, and there could also be a lot of debris that’s coming down. So we just want to make sure people are staying a safe distance away.”
While there’s no clear indication of rivers potentially overflowing near the City, McCloskey says the RDFFG is watching and waiting closely.
“If you are in a situation where you need to leave your home quickly, what are some things around your property that you need to prepare. Just take some time to do a bit of an inventory of what those possible impacts might be. For those who have livestock [or pets], it’s always a good time to consider if you have to move your animals.”
She suggests to double-check your 72-hour emergency kit and all personal documents are put into water-tight containers.
The RDFFG is also encouraging residents to start sandbagging around their homes as a precaution, especially in the Foreman Flats area.
