A renewable energy company in Vanderhoof has won a PowerSmart Award from BC Hydro.
Nechako Green Energy has received recognition for using the hog, also known as bark, from local sawmills to heat the kilns of the facility.
President Alan Fitzpatrick says they also use the wood sawdust and shavings to make pellets.
“And we have excess heat from burning the hog,” says Fitzpatrick, “and we use an organic rankine cycle turbo generator to capture the excess heat, and generate some electricity.”
Fitzpatrick says for the last year they can produce 14 gigawatt hours.
He says this is an equivalent to 1500 homes.
