A sense of excitement is running through the Regional District of Fraser-Fort George as the unveiled their Landfill annual report.
It focused around their Foothills Boulevard facility where over 104,000 tonnes of material was managed last year.
Over 31,000 of that material was diverted through recycling or other use like cover material or compost.
“The amount of waste we received to be landfilled was comparable to 2016, there was a little bit of an increase but the number that is most exciting is the amount of diverted material where we saw an increase,” says Laura Zapotichny, Manager of Waste Diversion Programs.
She adds for the remainder of this year and next year the RDFFG will continue to look for ways to impact their diversion goals and for the right materials to go to their proper destination instead of the landfill.
In addition, the Prince George Airport Authority presented a report to the RDFFG on the topic of passenger traffic at YXS.
The local airport almost reached a new milestone in 2017 but could reach or exceed that mark before the end of this year.
“Our passenger numbers were 499,125 in 2017 and over the last six months our passenger stats have increased by 5% and we could easily exceed the 500,000 mark if we stay on this pace,” says Robyn Smith, YXS Spokesperson.
The wildfire and related evacuations from July and August of 2017 saw increased passenger loads of 18% and 21% respectively, compared to both months in 2016
