BC Labour Board awards damages to some Mount Polley employees

The BC Labour Board has awarded damages to some Mount Polley Employees who were laid off earlier this year.

A decision on the United Steelworkers Local 1-2017 website states that the Board has ruled that the employer must make whole any employees who lost wages as a result of the company’s failure to give 60 days notice in advance of layoff.

The union says the board also stated that all employees who were laid off or forced to bump to lower wage rate classifications within 60 days of December 29th, 2017 should be paid for their losses.

Those affected by this decision were laid off in January and February of this year.

The union says the BC Labour Board has also made a decision on an application made by the Steelworkers in regards to concerns about the Company using replacement workers.

The Board’s decision is that the Company must provide the Union with notice of new hires as well as a description of their job duties.

Additionally, the buses must not have the windows obstructed or blacked out.

And finally, the union says the company has proceeded with an injunction order against our Union in Supreme Court.

It prohibits the union or its members from blocking or preventing any person or vehicle from travelling to the mine site.

Contract talks between the two sides resumed last week and some progress was reported.

Local 1-2017 President Brian O’Rourke said they were hoping to meet again this week.

The union has been on strike since May 23rd following a brief lockout.
