Motorists ignoring posted speed limit on the Yellowhead Bridge

Police are seeing motorist travelling well above the posted construction speed limit on the Yellowhead Bridge.

A construction zone is set up on the bridge with a posted speed limit of 50 kilometres an hour as crews work conduct upgrades.

Of the 2,864 vehicles observed, 89 per cent (2,461) were caught speeding, 10 per cent traveling over 21 kilometres per hour.

The highest recorded speed was 104 kilometres an hour.

Communication Officer Craig Douglass says people aren’t getting the point even though there are signs in the area.

“They have three chances to slow down and they still aren’t slowing down. The signage is adequate for the drivers to know that they are going into a construction zone an,d quite frankly, they are not concerned about it.”

Workers in the area have voiced concern about speeders in the area.

“There has been some nervousness with working close to the road, but there hasn’t been an actual dangerous close call,” Pat Preston, representative of the project.

Within in an hour, an RCMP officer said he pulled over four people for speeding.
